Treasury Guest Lecture: Immigration - Learning from the past and preparing for the future

Immigration is a major topic of public and policy debate. Migrants make a significant contribution to the fabric of our society. When they choose to move to New Zealand, they bring with them skills, talents, knowledge, experience, international connections, and financial, social, and cultural capital.
The Productivity Commission was asked by the Government to undertake an inquiry into what immigration policy settings would best facilitate New Zealand’s long-term economic growth and promote the wellbeing of New Zealanders. In this lecture, the Commission will present an empirical picture of evidence gathered and analysed, research conducted, and the final recommendations it has presented to Government.
