About Dave Heatley
Dave joined the Commission at its inception in 2011 and has turned his hand to six inquiries: international freight transport, trans-Tasman economic relations, services sector productivity, social services, tertiary education and technological change and future of work, and one research project: growing the digital economy and maximising opportunities for SMEs.
Before joining the Commission in 2011, he was a Research Fellow with the Institute for the Study of Competition and Regulation at Victoria University of Wellington. Prior to studying economics, Dave spent 25 years in the computer industry. He has worked for large international firms (eg, Hewlett-Packard, Unisys) and tiny local ones. He launched successful software start-ups in the 1990s and 2000s (along with some not-so-successful start-ups). His most successful creation was Echoview software, winner of many awards, including the 2018 Australian Digital Export Award.
Dave has an MBA (with distinction) from Victoria University of Wellington, and a Bachelor of Science (computer science) from the University of Tasmania.
Outside of work, he volunteers for bird conservation projects in Fiordland and for land search and rescue in Wellington. Dave is a keen skier, tramper and trail runner – and is itching to get back into the mountains!
